The beginning of the pandemic made me realize this plain fact- I’ve too much free time on my hands, and there’s no better time to watch a show or movie. Call it fate or just random luck, I happened to stumble upon a list of a genre defined as folk, mystery, horror, and thriller. The list checked all the boxes, and that was It for me. However, Midsommar stood out. The trailer was just what I had in mind- I’ll admit- I let my imagination run wild, and I guess I expected way more than necessary.
The movie is about numerous issues that a person grapples with- it all goes awry when it turns into a cult-like horror that seems to trap you. While it makes for an interesting, albeit painful watch, it is the ending that can be described as a complete disappointment. The movie ends with Dani smiling at the sight of her ex-boyfriend (Christian) burning. It was a gruesome end that left me squirming and yearning for a better ending.
If I could improvise the ending, it would be like this: Dani and Christian cast their differences aside and try to find out the truth about what happened to their friends. While it is difficult to get out of the cultic mess they have gotten into, they would’ve seen through the festivities that clearly would’ve ended with a sacrifice. The movie would end with Dani, Christian, and their friends waking up in an open field in Sweden, just one last car ride away from the Midsommar festivities. They've all had the same dream- they got winged, cut, stuffed, and turned into everything but themselves. They do not know if their dream was just a result of them getting high or it was a premonition. The group exchanges a glance- though they're all distant, the uneasiness and fear bind them together. They leave Sweden a little disappointed, confused, but feeling safe- knowing well that for now, they're alive.
